Paradise Magazine was created for an English class I took during the fall of 2019. The goal was to explore the characters in John Milton’s “Paradise Lost” in a contemporary format using entirely original written and visual content. I chose the name “Paradise” because the contents display Milton’s characters as successful, flourishing artists who (for better or worse) all contribute to the world in some way. The advertisements in this magazine serve as a partial satire of the plight of Adam and Eve in Paradise Lost, Eden, and the “Fortunate Fall.” Both feature articles explore the relationship between Milton’s characters through the portrayal of God, Chaos, and Satan as musicians. I chose to feature Eve rather than Adam to give her character the representation she lacks in Paradise Lost, and see her journey to gaining independence from Adam, which was discussed in depth throughout the semester.
